EXTREME Warrior gained a first career win - and gave trainer David Lanigan a first Newmarket success - when taking a 6f maiden on the July Course. Saif Ali’s Dubawi colt had clearly benefited from his debut run at Goodwood and responded well to the fitting of blinkers. The race was a messy affair but jockey Chris Catlin managed to keep his mount out of trouble and he stayed on gamely to win by two and a quarter lengths at odds of 40-1. A delighted Lanigan said: “He did it very well and I’m not too surprised. We actually thought he would run well first time but he is a slightly slow learner. “The first time he worked on grass he was very disappointing but second time he was much better. The blinkers just helped him focus better. After last time we couldn’t really make a plan for him. But now after this we’ll be able to sit down and have a discussion about where to go next. He handles this ground but he’ll be nicer horse with a bit of cut.” |
